WHAT IS ARTIST?
ARTIST: the Answer to the need for a common ITS language
Promoting the development and the diffusion of ITS on a National level, requires the definition of a strategic Framework Architecture providing the guidelines to make the different ITS applications integrated, interoperable and able to dialogue through a common language.
For this reason, in September 2001, the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure
and Transport promoted the ARTIST
(ARchitettura Telematica
Italiana per il Sistema
dei Trasporti) Project aimed
at defining the National ITS Architecture.
The ARTIST Project derives
from the National Plan for Transport and Logistics (PGTL) and it aims
at outlining the National Framework Architecture for the deployment of
ITS in Italy, at large scale and in a multi/intermodal context from the
present until the year 2010. The first phasis of the Project, concluded
in January 2003, provided the first Version of the ARTIST
Architecture.
On the basis of the stated User Needs, ARTIST
defines:
the necessary services
for users
the functional,
logical and physical relationships among systems
information
flows
organizational
relationships among the different users (Public and Private Institutions)
involved in the development and management of ITS.
ARTIST allows then to identify the
stakeholders and the strategies to be adopted in the whole process of
collection, processing and data management, which are fundamental for
ITS operation.
From ARTIST recommendations
can be derived for any new legal and technical standards required to ensure
the development of innovative solutions that are compatible with the existing
situation and able to exploit the opportunities offered by technological
advances.
The objective is to encourage the interoperability among Transport modes
and telematic services, at National and European level.
ARTIST is then the approach to be followed for the development and realisation of the new telematic systems moving people and goods.
ABOUT THIS SITE
ARTIST: a continuously evolving process
ARTIST is not a static product. It is a continuously evolving process tailored in order to fit dynamically the needs of people operating in the ITS Sector. This process is strictly related to the technological progress which strongly conditions the development and the evolution of the Architecture.
Consequently, this web site aims at being the privileged channel to show ARTIST contents, utility, applications and updating to as many people as possible, in order to enable everyone with interests in the field of Transport Telematics, to speak the same language and steer his own decisions towards a shared reference Framework, “by using ARTIST”.
This web site is a Dynamic tool, thought to follow ARTIST
evolution.
In this first version, the web site offers to every user the possibility to navigate in the Architecture through the software tool and to test ARTIST. It is also possible to download the whole documentation of Version 1.
A List of FAQ (Frequent Asked Questions)
has been elaborated, also on the basis of the other International Projects.
However, this service is bound to become a real on line forum through
which it will be possible to interact with experts of the Ministry to
make questions, suggestions and comments.
